Joomla SEO checker: diagnose URLs and metadata
A Joomla SEO check should include an article reachable through two menu items, a category, and a nonexistent URL. These samples help distinguish SEF-routing defects from article-level metadata problems.
Reach the same article through both menus
Record final addresses, H1 text, and canonical targets for both paths. When identical content has multiple routes, investigate menu aliases and router configuration before adding manual redirects. Check whether a menu title overrides the article title inappropriately. Do not delete a functioning menu item without understanding its effect on navigation and child pages.
Exercise friendly and missing URLs
Request a legacy parameterized address and the friendly route currently promoted to readers. Establish whether they redirect or independently return the article. Request a missing slug to detect error pages served with status 200. If rewriting breaks every child route, investigate server configuration instead of editing individual articles. Repeat checks on the primary HTTPS domain after applying the targeted fix.
Compare prominent and less-visible articles
Choose an article outside the main menu and determine whether readers can find it through a category or the configured sitemap. Compare its robots directives and metadata with a prominent article. A noindex affecting only one group warrants checking article settings, menu context, and relevant extensions. Retest every sample after the change to confirm routing remains stable. Crawl results show current declarations; they do not establish which canonical Google has selected or whether it has revisited the corrected page.
A worked publishing scenario
Illustrative scenario: enabling rewriting leaves the homepage working while every article fails. Investigate the server and route patterns before editing article text. Compare an index.php route with its SEF counterpart, recording statuses and destinations. After the targeted fix, test a category and a missing slug too. This reveals a rewrite rule that simply sends every request to a successful generic page rather than correctly resolving articles and preserving meaningful not-found responses for absent content.
Run a check and interpret the evidence
Submit one representative public URL to the free SEO checker below. Record its status, title, description, and canonical alongside the exact address and time of the check. Group repeated issues by their responsible template or configuration so a single targeted fix can be retested on multiple pages. A missing field and an intentional exclusion need different decisions.
An HTTP/HTML audit observes public responses. It does not sign into the platform, inspect every administrative setting, reproduce every client-side rendering behavior, or prove that Google has indexed a page. For search-engine evidence, compare Search Console URL Inspection and subsequent crawl data. Recheck the original URL after publication and cache refresh instead of interpreting a changed score alone as proof that the underlying issue is resolved.

Joomla checks to record before changing SEF
- In Global Configuration, record Search Engine Friendly URLs separately from Use URL Rewriting. The latter removes index.php only when server rewriting is configured. Do not toggle both options on a live site just to improve a checker score.
- For one article, record its article ID, category alias and the Itemid of each menu route. Compare the parameter URL with the SEF URL reached from each menu. Itemid supplies menu context to the router; matching article text alone does not prove the URLs are interchangeable.
- On Apache, check the Joomla htaccess.txt rules and existing .htaccess with the host before enabling rewriting. IIS and Nginx need their own server configuration. Test an article, category and a missing URL after the change, then clear the relevant Joomla/extension URL cache.
These are configuration checks, not measurements on a Joomla installation. The examples below use placeholder IDs; use real IDs from your own menu and article.
index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=123&Itemid=456
index.php/category-alias/article-alias
category-alias/article-alias
