Content Decay: Diagnose Why a Useful Article Loses Traffic

Content decay describes declining usefulness or performance of existing content, but a traffic decline alone does not tell you the cause. Check technical access, demand, search intent and competing pages before rewriting or changing the URL.

Compare the right evidence

Review similar periods and note seasonality. Separate impressions, clicks, CTR and position by relevant query groups, devices and countries. Check whether the page is still accessible, canonical and intended for indexing. A reporting change, lost demand or accidental noindex needs a different response from an outdated tutorial.

Read the article as someone completing the task

Check whether the introduction answers the question, examples still work and claims have sources. Find missing decisions or troubleshooting steps. Remove obsolete promises and invented statistics. Length alone is not the goal: a clear worked example can add more value than several paragraphs repeating a definition.

Worked example: a setup guide references an old workflow

Imagine readers reach a connection guide but the described authorization step no longer matches the product. Verify the current implementation, rewrite the affected steps and explain separate login and data-access permissions. Test the revised procedure with an authorized account. Keep the URL if the article still serves the same task. This is an illustrative content-maintenance case.

Choose between refresh and consolidation

Refresh when the page serves a distinct, useful purpose. If two pages answer substantially the same task, compare their useful sections and create one coherent destination with a reviewed redirect. Do not merge pages merely because their titles share words, or redirect everything to a broad category page.

Evaluate the result honestly

Record what changed and when. Verify live content, links and metadata, then follow comparable search segments after recrawling and sufficient observations. Avoid changing only the displayed date or promising a fixed recovery period. Search performance can move for reasons unrelated to the edit.

Use Google's people-first content questions as review prompts, rather than a mechanical word-count score.
