New Website Not Indexed: A Diagnostic Sequence
A new page can be accessible without being indexed. Investigate discovery, crawl access, indexing directives, canonical selection and content value separately rather than repeatedly submitting the same URL without learning why it is excluded.
Check seven concrete questions
- Does the final URL return the expected page and response?
- Can the relevant crawler fetch it under the host's robots rules?
- Do robots meta or X-Robots-Tag indicate noindex?
- Does the canonical identify the intended preferred page?
- Is the page linked from useful navigation and included in a suitable sitemap?
- Is the main content available in the rendered result?
- Does the page answer a distinct task with useful information?
Use URL Inspection to compare known indexing information with the live page. A live test checks current conditions; it is not a commitment that Google will index the page.
Worked example: a staging directive reaches production
Suppose a newly launched article is reachable and included in the sitemap but still delivers noindex from a staging configuration. Confirm the directive in the production response, fix the template or environment-specific behavior through the normal release process, then verify the page and a second page using that template. Inspect the live URL again and follow the indexing report over time. This is a hypothetical deployment problem, not a guaranteed explanation for every new website.
Avoid shortcuts that hide the real issue
Do not remove every crawl restriction or change canonicals blindly. Do not create extra near-identical articles to increase the number of URLs. A sitemap submission is a discovery signal, not a promise of inclusion or a fixed deadline. Low-quality or redundant pages may remain unindexed even after technical blockers are removed.
Record each finding and its supporting response or report. Run an SEO check, then use Google's URL Inspection guidance to interpret Google's own information.
