SEO Migration Checklist: Preserve Intent and Verify the Release
An SEO migration needs a reviewed URL mapping, production checks and follow-up monitoring. No checklist can promise zero traffic change, but a clear verification plan reduces avoidable routing and indexing mistakes.
Prepare before switching traffic
Inventory important old URLs from the CMS, sitemap, links and relevant search reports. Assign a destination that serves the original intent. Record intentionally removed content separately. Compare staging templates for metadata, main content, internal links, canonicals and indexing directives, while ensuring staging access is controlled appropriately.
Test the mapping
- Check representative old URLs and their final destinations.
- Avoid redirect chains, loops and unrelated homepage fallbacks.
- Update navigation and sitemap URLs to the intended destinations.
- Verify language variants and important images or documents.
- Exercise forms, authentication and conversion tracking through authorized tests.
Worked example: an old service URL is renamed
Suppose /old-service becomes /services/audit. If the new page still fulfills the same task, configure a direct permanent redirect, update internal links and verify the destination's self-canonical. If the new page is unrelated, do not use it merely to avoid a missing-page response. These paths are illustrative; the decision depends on the actual content and user intent.
Check production immediately after launch
Verify key routes, status codes, redirects and robots directives on the live host. A staging noindex accidentally carried into production needs attention before cosmetic metadata changes. Record release time and a rollback decision owner. Keep the old URL mapping accessible for later investigations rather than deleting it after the first check.
Monitor outcomes over time
Follow indexing, errors and search-performance trends with equivalent periods and filters. Separate reporting delay from a measured decline. A sitemap or recrawl request does not force immediate adoption of every change. Investigate templates and URL groups rather than repeatedly changing the whole configuration after one day's movement.
Consult Google's site-move guidance and trace a redirect when verifying your mapping.
