Server Logs, GA4 and Cloudflare: Which Number Answers Your Question?
There is no universal traffic total that makes server logs, GA4 and Cloudflare interchangeable. Choose a source by the event you need to understand, then state the unit, coverage and limitations of that source.
Use the source closest to the question
| Investigation | Useful source | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Did the origin receive a request? | Origin access records | Cached edge responses may not reach it |
| What did the edge handle? | Cloudflare analytics and events | Requests include more than page visits |
| What analytics events were collected? | GA4 reports and validation | Consent and collection affect coverage |
| Did a valid transaction complete? | Application or transaction records | Reconcile timestamps and identifiers carefully |
SearchBastion adds its own tracked-interaction and network context. That is another defined observation, not an independent census of humans.
Worked example: edge requests rise while origin requests do not
Suppose an image-heavy page becomes popular and the CDN serves many cached assets. Edge requests can rise without the same increase at the origin. Before diagnosing missing analytics or a bot attack, separate resource types, cache behavior and page paths. Compare the same dates and timezone. These relationships are illustrative, not fixed ratios that can be applied to every site.
Build a fair comparison
- Record property, hostname, time window and reporting freshness.
- Define the event and filters for each source.
- Separate HTML, static assets and APIs where the data allows it.
- Check tag, consent and release changes near any discontinuity.
- Review unresolved differences with actual application outcomes.
Do not subtract sessions from requests and label the remainder bots, lost revenue or untracked humans. A model that makes that claim needs independent evidence, not just arithmetic. Keep missing or unavailable fields visible as missing rather than silently converting them to zero.
