SSL and Security Headers: Interpret a Configuration Check

SSL and Security Headers: Interpret a Configuration Check

An SSL and header check can reveal certificate or response-configuration issues. It does not establish that an application is free from vulnerabilities, nor does a missing header by itself prove that an exploitable attack exists.

Inspect the actual connection and response

Check the requested hostname, certificate validity, trust chain and final HTTPS destination. Then inspect the headers delivered for representative pages, including authenticated and public routes where authorized. Redirect responses, cached pages and application errors can use different configurations, so one successful homepage response is not a complete review.

Choose policies for the application

Content Security Policy, HSTS and other headers have different purposes. A strict policy copied from another site can break scripts, embedding or integrations. Understand the required resources, test a suitable policy and monitor violations before enforcing broad restrictions. HSTS has persistent effects in browsers and deserves particular care.

Worked example: a payment widget breaks after a CSP change

Suppose a new policy prevents a required payment frame from loading. Reproduce the checkout failure in an authorized test, inspect the browser's policy violation and verify the intended provider origin. Adjust only the necessary directive and test the full flow again. Do not disable the entire policy or broadly allow every origin just to make one widget work. This is a hypothetical configuration example.

Build a verification checklist

  • Confirm the intended HTTPS host and certificate.
  • Check HTTP-to-HTTPS navigation and representative error responses.
  • Exercise login, forms, embedded resources and important scripts.
  • Record policy changes and an appropriate rollback procedure.
  • Treat automated findings as an investigation queue, not a certification.

SearchBastion's SSL Checker provides an initial configuration observation. Authorization controls, input handling, dependency management and application testing require separate review. A green header score does not validate those areas or guarantee search visibility.

Consult MDN's HTTP header reference before selecting and testing policies.
