Unusual Search Queries: Investigate Without Assuming Negative SEO
Unexpected queries in Search Console do not by themselves prove a negative-SEO attack or that someone can change your rankings by searching unusual phrases. First establish which pages and query groups are involved, then look for an explanation supported by page and deployment evidence.
Establish the scope of the anomaly
Compare equivalent periods, devices and countries. Check impressions, clicks and average position separately. Determine whether the unusual queries lead to a particular page or reflect a broader reporting change. Avoid treating a few observations or a rising percentage with a tiny denominator as a site-wide incident.
Inspect your own pages
Review the affected page's delivered and rendered content, title, outgoing links and indexing directives. Compare the CMS and release history for unauthorized edits, injected text or legitimate content changes. Search Console is not a record of every request to your server and cannot identify the person who searched a phrase.
Worked example: an unfamiliar commercial phrase appears
Suppose a technical article receives impressions for a phrase unrelated to its purpose. Inspect the page and templates before blaming a competitor. If a compromised widget inserts unrelated links, preserve evidence and address that compromise through the incident process. If the page is unchanged, keep observing the query-page data and consider ordinary matching or low-volume noise. These are alternative explanations, not a diagnosis of a real event.
Choose a proportionate response
Correct a verified content or security defect. Do not remove useful articles, block arbitrary visitor networks or apply search directives based only on an unexplained keyword. Track the relevant page and query segments after a verified change, and keep uncertainty in the report.
Use Google's Performance report documentation to interpret the measurements. Check page metadata as part of the investigation, while keeping analytics anomalies distinct from evidence of compromise.
