Affiliate Cookie Stuffing: Review Attribution and Integration Evidence

Affiliate cookie stuffing concerns attribution being set without the qualifying referral intended by a program's rules. Investigate the actual referral and attribution implementation; network flags or an unusual conversion ratio cannot independently prove that stuffing occurred.

Document the authorized attribution flow

Identify the legitimate referral event, identifier, consent handling, attribution window and commission-approval rules. Inventory scripts, tag-manager changes and third-party integrations that can affect those steps. Limit access to identifiers and avoid placing private user or transaction data in public reports.

Review evidence across the event chain

Compare referral records with application events and accepted conversions. Check retries, duplicate collection and known integration changes. Keep valid, invalid and unresolved cases separate. Do not infer a publisher's intent from an IP classification or automatically reject every commission associated with a low traffic score.

Worked example: an integration sets attribution unexpectedly

Suppose a newly added script appears to set a referral value during an unrelated page view. Reproduce the behavior in an authorized test, compare it with the approved program rules and inspect the integration change. Disable or repair the unauthorized behavior through controlled deployment and reconcile affected outcomes through the program's review process. This is a hypothetical verification exercise, not evidence against a real partner.

Set controls and review ownership

Use appropriate server-side validation of qualifying events, event deduplication and change control over attribution integrations. Test the legitimate referral journey after a repair. Keep a reason and evidence for disputed decisions, and do not promise automatic recovery of previously paid commissions.

SearchBastion can add tracked-interaction context, but it does not inspect every browser cookie or adjudicate an affiliate agreement. Review network context as supplementary evidence only. The OWASP third-party JavaScript guidance is useful for integration governance.
