Technical SEO Audit: A Prioritized Review Workflow
A technical SEO audit checks whether important pages can be fetched, understood and considered for indexing. Its useful output is a prioritized repair list with evidence and retest steps, rather than a score presented as a promise of rankings.
Build an inventory before running checks
Collect URLs from the CMS, sitemap and internal navigation. Choose examples of each template: homepage, category, article, product and pagination. Include a recently changed page and a page that has lost search traffic. A single homepage scan cannot establish the condition of the entire website.
Investigate in dependency order
- Check the response and final URL. Resolve unintended errors and redirect loops first.
- Inspect robots.txt, robots meta and X-Robots-Tag separately. A crawl restriction and an indexing directive do different jobs.
- Compare canonical URLs, sitemap entries and internal links. They should identify the same preferred page.
- Inspect the rendered main content when JavaScript is involved. Compare it with the initial HTML.
- Review titles, headings and internal links for useful descriptions and navigation.
- Diagnose performance using both repeatable lab tests and available field data. Test the main user journey as well as initial loading.
Example: prioritize a broken product template
Imagine a release leaves 40 product URLs returning a redirect loop while several article descriptions are too long. These numbers are illustrative. Fix the product routing before polishing descriptions. Save an affected URL, the response chain, the responsible template and an owner. After the fix, verify a direct successful response, the intended canonical and working navigation.
Define when a repair is complete
For each issue, record evidence, affected templates, the proposed change and a verification condition. Retest the original examples and a different page sharing their template. Use Search Console to follow indexing outcomes over time; a successful live test does not guarantee inclusion in search.
Run a single-page SEO check, then extend the review to the inventory. Security headers and audit scores are diagnostic signals, not independent evidence of search ranking or security certification.
